Vision Statement for Design and Technology

At St Thomas’, we aim to inspire in our pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and the people within it; engaging and helping to develop a life-long love of learning and engaging and helping to develop a life-long love of learning and understanding of the world they live in.

All children are encouraged to engage with the Design and Technology curriculum through inspiring, rigorous and practical activities. The children have the opportunity to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems and prepares them to participate in tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. We aim to inspire the children to always make something for somebody for some purpose.

Children will learn how to be critical of their work and that of others, we also encourage the children to develop their evaluation skills. This will allow our children not only to engage with the design process but also to develop their skills of perseverance, resilience and communication. Children are enabled to work both independently and as members of a team, to become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.

We grow together in Design and Technology by:

• Developing levels of originality and the willingness to take creative risks to produce innovative ideas and prototypes.

• Having an excellent attitude to learning and independent working.

• Using time efficiently and work constructively and productively with others.

• Carrying out thorough research, showing initiative and asking questions to develop an exceptionally detailed knowledge of users’ needs.

• Having the ability to act as responsible designers and makers, working ethically, using finite materials carefully and working safely.

• Developing a thorough knowledge of which tools, equipment and materials to use to make their products.

• Applying mathematical knowledge.

• Managing risks exceptionally well to manufacture products safely and hygienically.

• Instilling a passion for the subject and knowledge of, up-to-date technological innovations in materials, products and systems.
